Interquartile range definition:
In statistics, for any given set of data, the difference between the smallest and the largest observation is called the range.
However if we consider only the middle half of the observations and then find the difference between the smallest and largest observations of these middle half of the observations then that number would be our inter quartile range.
We can also define interquartile range as the difference between the first quartile and the third quartile. The first quartile represents the first one fourth of the observations. The third quartile is the first three fourths of the observations.
In other words, if first quartile is Q1, then one fourths of the data lies below Q1.
If third quartile is Q3, then three fourths of the observations lie below Q3. Then, the inter quartile range = Qr = Q3 - Q1.

Example: Find the inter quartile range of the following set of numbers that represent the scores of 11 students in a surprise test out of total of 30 marks.

Step 1: First arrange the numbers in order from the smallest to the largest:

Step 2: Next find the median (the middle observation) and mark it.

So for our problem, median is 9.
Step 3: Enclose the numbers smaller and larger than the median in brackets.
That makes it simpler to calculate the quartiles.
We can also calculate Interquartile Range.

Step 4: Now find Q1.
Q1 or the first quartile can be said to be the middle value of the left bracket numbers.
So here it is 5.

Step 5: Next find the Q3. The Q3 or the third quartile is the same as the middle number of the second or the right bracket.
Which is 18 for our example.

Step 6: The difference between the values of Q1 and Q3 that we found in the steps 4 and 5 above is our inter quartile range. So Qr = Q3 - Q1 = 18 - 5 = 13!!!
Uses of interquartile range:
As compared to the range, the inter quartile range is a more useful measure of central tendency.
That is because, it represents the spread of the middle 50% of the values.
If the data has outliers, the range can be a very large but yet not represent the data properly.
But inter quartile range is not affected by outliers.

Steps to Restore Computer Sound
Computers can be changeable and unstable so if your computer suddenly stops producing sound, you need to know the reasons for it and address the problem properly. If you have money and time to spend, you could go to a professional computer technician to resolve the problem but you can also do some troubleshooting steps yourself.

DotA 2 In Development By Valve
When Valve announced their involvement in the development of Defense of the Ancients 2, gaming news sites around the world swarmed. For those who haven't heard of Defense of the Ancients, or DotA for short, it is the pioneer of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena genre in video games. DotA originated as a custom scenario for the widely popular Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, whose development is helmed by Icefrog.
The rise of DotA could be attributed to the fact that it was made for the community and by the community.
Its popularity skyrocketed to the millions in 26 different languages worldwide, spawning competitive tournaments such as the World DotA Championship (WDC) and the SMM Grand National DotA Tournament with cash prizes up to USD32,000.
Since its release, DotA has become a staple at Blizzard Entertainment's BlizzCon and the Asian World Cyber Games, as well as the Cyberathlete Amateur and CyberEvolution leagues. Gamasutra declared that DotA was perhaps the most popular "free, non-supported game mod in the world".
Its prominence has also brought competitors looking for a cut in the profits, with similar MOBA-styled games such as League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth popping up.
Fast forward to present day 2010, DotA 2 is under development by Valve together with Icefrog.

A Much Needed Break
You can feel it.
This morning is different.
The house is quiet.
My daughter had her best friend spend the night last night and they are sleeping peacefully.
The pressure is gone. It's the first day of summer. Woo Hoo!!!! My daughter couldn't wait for school to be out.
(Just like your daughter) She was sick of finals and the pressure.
She'd daydream about going to the beach and chilling with her friends. And I would have to reel her back in and encourage her to finish strong.
She was very clear that she needed a break. Not only was she clear, and would day dream about what she wanted, she'd take the next step.
She took action and made plans.
And she's reaping the benefits. She's having a great time with her boyfriend and her friends.
Her energy and joy is contagious.
Also, she is clear about what she needs.
"Mom I need to sleep in.
" I think we can learn a lot from our daughters. Moms need a break. Summer is different for moms.
We still have some perks.
We get to escape the morning dramas with our daughter.
(Since they are sleeping in) Though the pressure of school is over, we still have to get up and run the household and go to work.
At times it gets more complicated.
Your schedule is thrown off.
Now you have to shuttle her around.
And for the older teens, you have the pressure of making sure she is supervised and having TOO much fun. So it's easy for you can keep plodding along without taking a break.

Playdates - It Is OK to Say "No"
The other day I was talking with some friends about how the May kidnapping events in Cleveland had made me even more attentive (and stressed out) when it comes to supervising my kids in public areas like parks.
I am becoming more and more protective of my girls every time I read new details about the horrific events that happened in Cleveland.
The discussion quickly turned to knowing who your child is friends with and ultimately to playdates.
Some kids like them, some kids do not. Some parents like them, some parents do not.
I have always been a parent who likes playdates because when they were younger, it encouraged my children to share their toys when they were home and practice being away from home when they were weren't. Looking back, I was not very picky on where my kids went to playdates or birthday parties because if they wanted to go, I usually let them.
Sometimes I knew the parents well but other times, we had just met in passing while dropping the kids off at daycare.
I didn't think about this too much until recently.
One of my friends, let's call her Greta, hates playdates. Yes, we teach our children not to say "hate" but in this case, this word is accurate.
Greta's initial reaction is to distrust everyone and you need to earn her trust when it comes to her children. If you are not one of the few families that Greta trusts completely, her knee jerk reaction is to say no.
After thinking about her child's safety, Greta's thoughts turn to "If Billy goes to Peter's house, I am then going to have to have Peter over." Greta does not want to feel as though she is in debt to a family for a playdate! This gets difficult for working parents whose weekends are reserved for family time (when not at one of many sporting events). After talking to Greta and one of our other friends, questions swirled around my head.
Should you feel obligated to reciprocate a playdate? Should I let my daughter go to someone's house if only the dad is home? When do I ask if the family has guns in the house? What about older brothers? Do my set of rules change for sleepovers? Would I feel differently if I had boys? The questions kept coming! On the topic of guns, I am struggling for a way to make it seem like a natural thing to ask someone. "Can Billy come for a play?" "Yes, assuming you don't have guns in the house!?!?" That conversation just doesn't flow. If I don't know the family, I am beginning to wonder if I should just use Greta's standard line, "we don't really do playdates.
" Is it worth all the worrying for your child to go to a playdate? If your child is insisting on having a playdate with a new friend, have it at your house or agree to meet at a park where you can chat with the parents more.
Remember that if YOU feel uncomfortable, it is fine to say no. Your child will survive and they will see their friend at recess and lunchtime. One day, they will even forgive you.

Definite Plan - How Kid's Dreams Are Turned Into Reality - The Second Step
The key ingredient in teaching children how to get into the habit of planning, "The Second Step", is by simply encouraging them to do so.
Whether it's the parents not putting enough emphasis on the importance of planning and working with their child, or the school system not consistently working with the kids in planning methods, the bottom line is children are growing up missing the opportunity to learn about the value of planning their precious time. Working with many children, we have come to discover that kids really do like to plan, once they see the underlying value behind it.
They are quite perceptive to using a tool that is personal to them and assists them with direction, not only on a daily basis, but for the long-term as well.
We first need to start by explaining to them how planning will start to free up more time for them to do the things they want to be doing, instead of just doing the things they have to be doing, such as the chores, or for some, homework.
Now, there are many ways to go about teaching a child how to come up with a clear-cut plan and why planning is so very important.
We would like to share with you a simple, yet effective way you can communicate to any child in your life the significance of coming up with a definite plan for their respective futures.
To continue, you will need a piece of paper and a pencil. Start by writing the number twenty-four on top of the page. This will represent the number of hours in a day. Together, figure out how many hours each night they sleep on average and subtract that from your twenty-four.
So say they sleep ten hours we would be left with four-teen hours.
Then we subtract school time, so figure seven hours, we are left with seven hours.
Now together, brainstorm with the child a list of the things that they would normally have to do each day, besides going to school and sleep; such as brushing teeth, showering, homework, chores, eating dinner or snack etc. When you are done with that, associate the amount of time it should take for each one of those tasks.
For example, brushing teeth and showering equals 45 minutes.
Homework 1 hour, choirs 30 minutes, food time 30 minutes, planning for next day 15 minutes etc.
(Remember every family is different so base these numbers on what is the norm for your family.) We then go ahead and add those times up.
For our example we would total out at 3 hours.
Now we subtract these three hours from the seven that we were left over after sleep and school time were deducted.
In this example we are left with 4 hours for the day. This could be used for child's free time or what ever other activities they need or want to do. Some kids go to aftercare, some kids have practice for whatever they are into and that's fine. Make your adjustments accordingly and together. The bottom line here, is that children will know each day what is expected from them.
They will be more apt to do these things promptly because they took part in planning for it.
They then start to realize the free time it is giving them and then start to become consistent with it. For younger kids, create a plan book from scratch, even some of the older kids can get into this, too.
Design it however they want. They can add stickers or make fancy title pages within their planner.
The point here is for them to personalize it as much as they like.
You can even pick up an inexpensive planner for their use.
Talk to them about the importance of using the planner daily, and getting into the habit of planning for each day the night before. Second you have to have a Definite Plan. What is a Definite Plan? Here is an easy way to break it down for the kids that is self-explanatory.

We will start with the D in Definite. D stands for Definite, Devoted, Dreams, Direction The D in Definite tells us that we must be Devoted to our Dreams. Constructing a definite plan gives us the Direction we need to make our desires come true.

This simply means that we must constantly make changes to our plan, along the way, to assure that what we are doing is leading us in the direction we intended.
Stay Focused at all times on what your doing and your results are sure to be Favorable.
I equals Identify, Inventory Always review your plan.
You must Identify all that's working, and not working, so your able to make the necessary adjustments.
Take Inventory of all your tasks and add any more that you can think of.
N tells us a plan is Necessary Having a plan, a definite plan, is Necessary if you want to achieve your goals.
I refers to Imagination and Ideas Let our Imagination spell it out for us.
What does your Imagination tell you? How do you see it? How much of it can you Imagine? Imagine that you have already achieved the Ideas you came up with.
Picture what it would be like if you already succeeded in reaching your goal.
How does it make you feel? T is for Thinking Thinking about your mission, reviewing your plan daily in your mind, will also help you reach your goals. Keep it fresh in your head as much as possible, and before you realize it, you will be there.
E is for Examine Again, Examine both the negative outcomes that you encountered, as well as the positive ones.
Mistakes will definitely be made along the way.
Take the time to Examine both and question what could have been done to avoid those particular mistakes.

A child's will is what will determine how much they want to take on. However, it is the parent who should make the final decision as to what their child's activity schedule should be.
Start talking to your child from an early age about what they want to be.
Chances are, they'll change their minds a dozen times, but that's okay! What's not okay is to decide for them what YOU want them to be.
You can offer them ideas, but unless they have the passion, you are doing them a disservice by trying to force or expect them to do something they have no desire to do in life. Help them find where there passion lies and the chances of success will inflate drastically.
Tell your child what a great student he/she is when they do well. Celebrate! Let them know what success feels like. Create a picture of how you see them an outstanding musician, nurse, pro-baseball player, doctor, dancer, teacher, etc.
Help them believe in themselves by pointing out their strong points and showing them how to build on their weaker points. Remind them how they have already excelled by referring to something they did that they thought they never could at one time.
Give them positive feedback of your observances concerning individual aspects of their life.
Help them to see themselves as successful without putting undue pressure or stress on them.
Every child needs to be allowed to go at their own pace.
Let your child compete without having a nervous breakdown.
As a parent, know when to back off and when to give them a gentle push.
It is very important to let your child understand that there are steps to success and that disappointments or failures are part of life.
Allowing your child to believe they will succeed every time only sets them up for failure. Program them to know they can do it, but when they miss the mark, encourage them to try, try, try again.
Turn a failure into a positive by explaining how they're getting closer to their goal and to never give up. Success takes place in stages that require much work.
Reassure your child that the reward will be gratifying and with each success, they will venture to the next level. Lastly, allow your child to fall -just be there to pick them up and guide them back on the right track.
